KaOS Linux

KaOS has mainly chosen to use the Linux kernel (although the Illumos kernel is constantly being evaluated and a future transition is a request).

After this selection, the best package manager available, the most flexible way to build packages, repository maintenance for a perpetual distribution like KaOS is pacman/makepkg.


As for the Desktop Environment, whether it's based on Linux or Illumos, there will never be a change, KDE Plasma will be the choice, Qt the Toolkit. With these choices made, April 2013 package creation for this standalone distribution began. KaOS is a distribution from the ground up, every package in every repository is built by and for KaOS. By July 2013, the initial target of approximately 1500 packages was achieved.
