FilmCraft

FilmCraft is a professional non-linear (NLE) video editing software developed by the ArtCraft team, who have recently gained significant attention in the open-source world. It was written entirely from scratch using pure Rust programming language.


It is designed as a powerful, modern, and free alternative to cumbersome subscription models and high tuition fees.
Key Features

    Pure Rust Architecture and Lightweight Design: Thanks to its dedicated infrastructure that minimizes external library dependencies (FFmpeg, etc.), it uses system resources extremely efficiently. Compared to classic, massive editing programs, it opens much faster and offers a smooth experience even on low-end computers.

    Familiar Editing Interface: Features source/program monitors, media panels, flexible workspaces, and a multi-channel timeline structure similar to Adobe Premiere Pro. Allows for direct switching without changing editing habits.

    Precise Timebase (Integer Timebase): Uses an integer-based time architecture instead of approximate frame durations. This prevents frame rate drift or synchronization issues at precise frame rates such as 23.976 or 29.97 drop-frames.

    Advanced Color Grading: Features a professional color grading panel with curves, color wheels, secondary HSL corrections, LUT support, HDR, and logging workflows.

    Audio and Effects Tools: Offers metering tools compliant with EBU R128 loudness standards, a keyframe-supported audio mixer, over 50 video effects, and numerous transition options.

    Platform Support: It works with Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems, as well as through a browser thanks to WebAssembly support. 

What are the limitations?

Since this is a project still under development (alpha stage), it is still in the maturation phase in some areas:

    External plugin support (VST3, Audio Units, or OpenFX) is not yet available.

    Premiere cannot directly open (.prproj) projects; projects must be imported in FCP7 XML, AAF, or OTIO formats.

    It has been tested less extensively than industry-standard, massive software solutions for very large raw camera formats or complex hardware workloads.
