 The Earthquake Network research project is developing a smartphone-based early earthquake warning system that can detect earthquakes in real time and alert the community.  Smartphones can detect earthquakes thanks to the accelerometer in every device.  When an earthquake is detected, users with the application installed are immediately alerted.  Since earthquake waves move at a certain speed (5 to 10 km/h), people who have not yet reached the damaging waves of the earthquake can be warned.
